Eternal Baseball includes all thirty current Major League franchises, as well as the returning Montreal Expos and the new Birmingham Knights (featuring the greatest players from the Negro Leagues). Having 32 teams gives us the opportunity for a little realignment, into eight four-team divisions. Today we introduce the streamlined American League East - the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and the Toronto Blue Jays. Who's your favorite to win this division in the inaugural season of Eternal Baseball? Red Sox fans on Facebook questioned whether Fred Lynn deserved that CF slot over Carl Yastrzemski - I looked into it and the averaged numbers for Yaz were selling him a bit short. Looking at his peak seasons of 1967-69 Yaz absolutely makes the club, with Fred Lynn sliding down to an inactive spot. We appreciate the fan feedback - we will never know a club better than its die-hard fans.

Fan feedback is helping us out - in researching Rico Petrocelli, we find that Nomar Garciaparra (who qualifies at 3B) should be on the main roster instead of Wade Boggs. Thanks for the help!

Not sure how Boggs doesn’t start over Devers and Garciaparra doesn’t start over Boegarts. Also I’m not sure how Martinez even belongs to the Red Sox not the Tigers let alone starts over Evans. Outfield should be, from left to right, either Williams, Lynn, Evans or Williams, Lynn, Betts if you want to keep people in their natural positions. If you want to get creative position wise, without putting a corner Of in center, you could go or Williams, Lynn, Yaz or Williams, Betts, Yaz

Bret, we are welcoming feedback and making changes where they make sense. Just yesterday, a stat error we corrected gave Yaz a spot on the main roster in place of Fred Lynn. Thanks to a fan suggestion (and Nomar having earned 3B positioning later in his career) Nomar replaced Boggs on the active roster. It switches up the lineups too - against RHP it's Nomar at SS and Devers at 3B. Against LHP it's Bogaerts at SS and Nomar at 3B. J.D. Martinez is on the Boston roster perhaps a year early, but he'll be more Red Sox than Tiger soon - and his averaged OPS from his three Tiger years would put him inactive on Detroit's roster rather than playing for Boston. The stat compilation was done before the 2020 season, and last year will probably be a wash for everyone with the oppressive conditions. Yaz played enough centerfield to qualify and Manny can play RF too, so Boston goes Ted/Betts/JD (with Manny DHing) against LHP, and Ted/Yaz/Manny (with Ortiz DHing) against RHP. It's hard to build the daily lineups because Boston is STACKED.

And it twists one more time - Boggs' numbers do edge Devers at least for now. So it's Boggs at 3B and Nomar at SS vs. RHP, and Nomar at 3B with Bogaerts at SS vs. LHP. Devers moves to the inactive roster, but is likely the first callup if a 3B/1B/DH type gets injured.

Your Red Sox Roster makes no sense. The Outfield has 3 Left Fielders, a RF, and a DH? You have some fantastic Centerfielders, Lynn, Smith, Speaker, and DiMaggio yet you don't have one on the roster?
If you are going with all time single season I would have:
Williams 1941 DH Betts 2018, Yaz 1967, Speaker 1914 - OF INF - Foxx 1938, Doerr 1944, Petrocelli 69, Boggs 88, fisk 72 catches.
you could argue a switch to Nomar at SS his 1999 was excellent. If you are looking career wise, then it would be Williams, Yaz, Evans, Speaker, Ortiz, Doerr, Boggs, Nomar, Fisk, you could easily get tricky and play Yaz at first and make Manny a DH. Sadly, Betts only player 5 years so he could not get up the ranks for all time players. IMO Tris Speaker was a better overall player in Boston he had 2 seasons of 10+ WAR and a better OPS+. His batting average was better in Cleveland but he did more in Boston and played better defense.

Jimmy, thanks for writing - we always appreciate feedback from diehard fans.
Bear in mind that the sim we are using (Action! PC Baseball from DK Sports) takes every player's three best consecutive seasons and averages them to find each one's athletic peak - this is used as their statistical baseline in Eternal Baseball. Every player is also ranked from 1-10 defensively at every position where they qualified during their real big league career. We looked at accumulated WAR and peak OPS (plus defensive rating) to put together our rosters for each team.
Tris Speaker was a baseball God, but in this simulation he is allocated to Cleveland, where he spent more seasons, hit for a higher average, and piled up accumulated stats greater than his time in Red Sox. Speaker did win his only MVP in Boston and stole lots more bases there, but in the end he probably belongs a little more in Cleveland.
We have five players on the Red Sox 40-man roster who qualify as center fielders, and here's how they stack up based on their peak OPS (best three consecutive seasons averaged) along with their center field defensive rating (in parentheses).
Carl Yastrzemski (CF-6) 1967-69: .293/36 HR/102 RBI/13 SB/.944 OPS
Fred Lynn (CF-9) 1978-80: .311/24 HR/88 RBI/6 SB/.936 OPS
Mookie Betts (CF-8) 2017-19: .299/28 HR/87 RBI/24 SB/.924 OPS
Dwight Evans (CF-4) 1980-82: .285/24 HR/76 RBI/3 SB/.907 OPS
Reggie Smith (CF-6) 1973-75: .305/21 HR/82 RBI/5 SB/.900 OPS
On our roster the Red Sox run a platoon - Betts starts in CF against LHP, Yaz starts against RHP. In a couple years, Betts will move over to the Dodgers roster and Boston will have an outfielder opening on their active roster. Would you elevate Fred Lynn next?
As for right field, Boston can play Manny Ramirez, J.D. Martinez, Carl Yastrzemski, or Mookie Betts there. Manny and J.D. tend to split time there while Ted Williams has left field locked down.
