Get Jorge Soler, Moose and Angel Berroa off of that starting roster. Insert Alex Gordon (you have to include defensive metrics here...see also Frank White) and put UL Washington at short with Escobar backing him. Esky magic wins games..regardless of stats. Berroa, Moose and Soler belong on the farm for sure but if I'm the skipper, there is no way Frank White and Alex Gordon aren't on the field.

We appreciate the fan feedback, and there has been a strong push from Royals fans for more representation for longtime Royals like Amos Otis, Willie Wilson, Alex Gordon, and Frank White. Defensive ratings matter and I know all four of those players were outstanding defenders. The peak OPS (meaning the average of their best three consecutive years averaged) for the KC outfielders on the 40-man roster read like this:
1. Jermaine Dye (1999-2001) .882 OPS 2. Danny Tartabull (1987-1989) .880 OPS 3. Jorge Soler (2018-2020) .875 OPS 4. Hal McRae (1975-1977) .856 OPS 5. Johnny Damon (1998-2000) .837 OPS 6. Amos Otis (1977-1979) .830 OPS 7. Alex Gordon (2011-2013) .816 OPS 8. Bo Jackson (1988-1990) .809 OPS 9. David DeJesus (2008-2010) .806 OPS 10. Willie Wilson (1980-1982) .764 OPS
I know Soler isn't much of a fielder, so he'll probably end up at DH. How far up that list would you slide Alex Gordon based on his fielding ability? Otis/Damon/McRae/Dye weren't poor fielders either...
At shortstop, the peak OPS numbers look like this...
1. Angel Berroa (2003-2005) .721 OPS 2. U.L. Washington (1980-1982) .700 OPS 3. Alcides Escobar (2012-2014) .657 OPS
It's hard to make a decision without access to the defensive ratings - I could see if there's a discrepancy between Washington and Berroa you might consider a swap, but it's hard to imagine that Escobar should hurdle both players ahead of him offensively (in this simulation) based on defensive proficiency. I will take a look when I get back to my home computer.
At second base, the numbers look like this:
1. Mike Moustakas (2015-2017) .824 OPS, also plays 1B and 3B 2. Whit Merrifield (2017-2019 .801 OPS, also plays LF and CF 3. Frank White (1984-1986) .747 OPS
The positional flexibility and offensive superiority give Moose & Whit an advantage here, but White is definitely a better defender than them both. I'll have to take a look at the defensive rankings and see if a massive discrepancy warrants a change.
We appreciate your feedback - we want to build the most competitive possible rosters for every team in time for Opening Day on February 16.
