CHRISTY MATHEWSON BLANKS ASTROS IN GIANTS BLOWOUTHOUSTON – Christy Mathewson outdueled Mike Scott and the Giants exploded for eight runs in the seventh inning en route to a 10-0 wipeout win over the Astros on Opening Day. School was in session as Mathewson (1-0) kept the Astros off-balance all night (9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K). Astros starter Mike Scott allowed just one run in the first six innings, but the seventh inning turned into an absolute nightmare. In order: Will Clark walked, Bobby Bonds pinch ran for Clark and stole second base, George Davis singled and stole second base, Bobby Bonds scored on a wild pitch, Roger Connor was walked intentionally, Buster Posey singled home Davis, Bill Terry grounded out, and Mel Ott singled. Down 3-0 with the bases loaded and his pitch count climbing, Scott was replaced but not relieved by Octavio Dotel. The Giants worked back-to-back walks and scored on a wild pitch before Willie Mays crushed a 3-run homer to left field to make it 9-0 Giants. Mel Ott added an eighth inning sacrifice fly to end the onslaught at 10-0 Giants. Game two is tomorrow night from Minute Maid Park, with Carl Hubbell squaring off against Don Wilson.
