CHICK HAFEY’S POWER SURGE LEADS CARDINALS PAST METS NEW YORK – A main event showdown between aces Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson (1-0) became the Chick Hafey Show as the Cardinals downed the Mets 5-3 in eleven innings on Opening Day. Both Seaver (8.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) and Gibson (10.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) pitched well, but Cardinals right fielder Chick Hafey was the star, drilling a pair of two-run homers to lead St. Louis to the 5-3 win. Stan Musial contributed a solo home run and Jason Isringhausen retired David Wright (who cracked a solo homer in the second inning) to notch his first save of the season. Game two is tomorrow night from Citi Field, with the Mets sending Dwight Gooden to the mound to face the Cardinals’ Mort Cooper.
