WASHINGTON D.C. - Max Scherzer (1-0) was in control on Opening Day, pitching into the eighth inning as the Nationals defeated the Reds 4-2.
Scherzer (7.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K) allowed just Joey Votto’s RBI single in the fourth inning, while the Nationals got to Reds starter Will White (7 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) with Daniel Murphy’s RBI groundout, Jayson Werth’s RBI triple, Ryan Zimmerman’s scramble home on a wild pitch, and Juan Soto’s RBI double. Sean Doolittle relieved Scherzer with one out in the eighth inning, and allowed Frank Robinson’s homer leading off the ninth inning to bring the score to 4-2. Tyler Clippard took over and closed things out, earning his first save when Barry Larkin grounded out to Trea Turner.
Game two is tomorrow night from Nationals Park, with Jordan Zimmerman on the bump for Washington facing Cincinnati’s Noodles Hahn.
