Detroit's Justin Verlander threw the first no-hitter in Season Four of Eternal Baseball today, completely handcuffing Texas as the Tigers beat the Rangers 7-0. It didn't seem like much when Lou Whitaker mishandled Rusty Greer's fourth-inning grounder, but that error allowed Texas' lone baserunner on the day. Verlander ALMOST notched a perfect game, issuing zero walks and striking out twelve Rangers in a masterpiece performance. The win lifts Verlander to 3-1, and drops his ERA to 2.19 as Detroit picks up their fourth straight victory.

When JV has thrown no-nos in real life it has always been a great sign for the Tigers.
Should've played Gehringer and we'd have had a perfect game.

Whitaker is rated slightly better defensively than Gehringer so it's hard to say if "The Mechanical Man" would've picked that sinking liner that "Sweet Lou" missed!

I'm a Sweet Lou fan, but that's hard to believe. Gehringer was called the Mechanical Man because he fielded 2B like a robot, scooping up everything. He might have been the Ozzie Smith of 2nd basemen.

Baseball-Reference.com shows Lou to have a better fielding percentage (.984 to .976) and less errors per nine innings (.089 to .143), but Gehringer had superior range (5.78 to 5.39).

Remember, Lou played in the more modern era with manicured infields. Chas played back in the days of sandlot infields.
